Why the Apple IPod Mini Is so Popular

Remy Jirek

Introduction
The Apple iPod mini was introduced to the world in 2004 and is a more compact version of the original. Despite its small size this unit does just as much as its bigger brothers and has great features such as a compact flash micro drive and an improved touch sensitive scroll wheel. It can support a number of different storage formats, such as mp3 and WAV and the battery can last up to 18 hours. You can get great accessories for it such as an iPod accessory case at any iPod accessory store.

A New Offering From Apple

Apple had announced the release of its iPod mini, a smaller version of the Apple iPod portable audio player, on January, 6 2004 and released it on February 20 of 2004. It can operate with Mac and Windows as well as with restricted third party support for Linux and UNIX software. But, it was discontinued on September 7, 2005 when a new replacement in the form of Apple's iPod nano took over.

Anyway, as a third generation iPod it continued to have the touch sensitive scroll wheel which was very popular, though it did make a few cosmetic changes by placing the button beneath the wheel instead of the normal placement above and thus the term "click wheel" was coined. Operating the buttons meant that the user had to physically push the edge of the wheel towards the inside in the direction of one of the four labels.

The click wheel used in all versions of the iPod, including the fourth and fifth generation iPods as well as the iPod nano are developed by an outside party named Synaptics. The nano 5GB click wheel, on the other hand, has been developed in-house at Apple itself. Though new generation iPods from Apple now come with color display, older ones had to make do with monochrome displays that displayed the menu or information regarding the current track which was playing.

Both generation of iPod minis were more or less identical in size but had dissimilar storage and different battery life, while the case was made of anodized aluminum. The Apple iPod mini has a compact flash micro drive that is manufactured by Hitachi and though earlier versions had a battery life of 8 hours, this was improved and began to last as much as 18 hours. The Apple iPod mini has a dock connector which is placed at the bottom of the device and is used to connect with a computer and batteries are charged while connected.

This iPod mini supports a number of different storage formats, some of which are WAV, MP3, AAC/M4A and AIFF as well as Apple Lossless and to allow true synchronization of software with the iPod mini, it has retained its integration of iPod tunes and the iTunes Music Store. It is priced at around $199 for the 4GB model and is good value for money though cheaper models are also available for those who want to hear digital music but who do not need huge storage capabilities.

Weight is not a problem as it only weighs less than a couple of CDs and music can be downloaded onto the iPod mini from a PC or an Apple computer and its popularity seems to know no bounds with demand easily outstripping supply.
